An unexpected adventure

It was a dark and stormy night… well, actually I don’t remember what it was like that day, but I do remember the though coming to me that my 14 year old son wanted to start a YouTube channel and call himself TheNerdWhoPlaysThings (you could go follow his channel too) and stream Geometry Dash gameplay. I like to support my kids in their endeavors, but I also am aware that the internet is a big place. I needed to be able to moderate his chat during his live streams in a way that maintained his anonymity. That’s where the idea for this whole thing called TheDadWhoPlaysThings came from.

I’m no stranger to the platform, as I manage the channels for a couple of other entities as part of my day-job, so I figured I could follow suit with my son, and start posting videos of my gameplay. My first choice was to record and post myself playing Ark Survival Evolved, since that’s the game that I’ve spent the most time playing over the last few years. IT’s fresh enough, there’s plenty of opportunities for fun adventures, and at the time, there were not many people starting up new play throughs.

Soon, both my kids suggested I try making Minecraft videos. The catch? I'd never played Minecraft before. Sure, I’d watched my kids play in creative mode and seen various creators' videos, but I had never actually played the game or watched a proper tutorial. I was diving in completely fresh. With a gaming history dating back to my childhood with Ataris and my trusty old NES, I figured I could pick it up pretty easily.

In a sense, I was right. But I had no idea how deep and complex this “kids” game is, and I quickly fell in love with it. And that's where we are in August of 2024. I'm still very green in the world of Minecraft, but it has given me the opportunity to do something I love and build an amazing community while doing it. I never imagined that a simple YouTube channel could become such a source of joy and happiness. Even with the occasional negative comment, it brings me immense joy to see the conversations happening in the comment section of my videos.

If you're still reading this, know that it's because of you. You are the reason I continue doing this. You are the reason I look forward to recording new videos each week, and you are the reason I eagerly await the comments that come in with each new upload.

What an amazing ride this has been, and I’m happy to be on it with all of you. Thank you, and I'll see you in the next video!
